Monday, January 20 - Maceio, Brazil

 It was another early tour today because we leave at 3 pm.  We elected for the basic 3 hour overview bus tour.  It was another hot one, so the air-conditioned bus was quite welcome.  This is a much cleaner city than we've seen so far.  There was far less garbage and graffiti on the streets, although there was some.  


Gas is about $4 a gallon here. (The exchange rate is 6 Brazilian Reals to 1 USD.  These prices are in liters.)


More beautiful beaches here, but only a few were busy.

This tree produces hard, red berries that local vendors use to make jewelry.  They give away a few berries for good luck.

So much of the wiring we've seen looks like this, but most is much worse.

We stopped at a church and a small indoor shopping market before returning to the ship.  The other excursions went to the beach for either 1-1/2 or 3 hours, but looking at the full sun and the lack of shade, I'm glad we didn't elect to do that.

At Trivia we got 12/15 for 1 point.  I had forgotten that Andrew was doing a show tonight, so I only got to hear the last two songs (Sweet Caroline being one).  He has a very nice voice so it was nice to see him get back to his roots and perform.

Tonight we had dinner in Prime 7 at a sharing table with Christy (a man) and Patty, and Doug and Joanne.  This is the first time that I can say I wouldn't choose to have dinner with them again.  Anyway, having less than fun dinner companions once in a while is acceptable.

Monday, February 3 - Not Falkland Islands

 Well, I guess I didn't cross enough fingers and toes.  It was pretty rough last night and Captain Ahbi warned us that getting into the Falklands would be a 50/50 proposition.  We were the third ship in port today and we drew the short end of the straw so we got the anchoring location farthest out where it was just too rough to try tendering.  It was marginal, at best, and the forecast for later in the day was worse so it was decided not to risk anyone's safety and move on.  The winds on deck were unbelievable - the kind that take your breath away. So glad I brushed my hair this morning. It was quite a disappointment, but at least we have been here before.  So now we are headed on down to the Antarctic Peninsula.  The ship is really moving now.  And the door to our balcony is making the most interesting noises with the wind.  It sounds somewhere between a moaning dog and a crying baby.  Terry Bishop, who is next door, says they wedge fol...

Tuesday, February 11 - At Sea in the Chilean Fjords

 Terry Bishop gave Part 1 of a 3-part series on Captain Fitzroy, Charles Darwin, and the HMS Beagle.  I have the picture of the replica in yesterday's entry.  That ship carried 69 people when it left England on its journey around the world.  Darwin slept on a hammock slung above the chart table in the chart room which he shared with 5 others.  That was right next to the privy I have the photo of.   There were two more lectures today, one on dolphins in the area that we might see, although I haven't seen anything since we left the Beagle Channel.  The other was about how the Antarctic continent is "managed" by the treaties.   We got up close and personal with the Amalie Glacier today.  The weather was very overcast so it wasn't the prettiest glacier we've seen. Monday, February 17 - Home Again

 I'm a bit late posting this, but we've had a busy few days. We were called off the ship at around 8:45 am and made our way through Customs to find our bus.  We had a "full day" tour of Santiago and then drop off at the airport.  The bus was comfortable for the 90 minute drive to Santiago.  We passed through a wine valley on the way there where they grow the carmenere grape.  Then a stop at the Catholic cathedral on the main square. No more photos as there was a service going on and it didn't seem appropriate, but it is a lovely cathedral.  Interestingly, we watched 2 men being brought out of the church in handcuffs by the local police.  A woman who was inside said they were arrested after coming back from communion.   Then we made a stop at the government square before going for lunch on our own.  A little more driving around before heading off to the airport where we were dropped off around 4...
