Monday, January 6 - Fort Lauderdale, FL

 As I mentioned, we decided to change our flights from Washington, DC to Ft. Lauderdale so that we could get out of town on Sunday ahead of the big storm coming in Sunday night and Monday.  We were originally scheduled to fly out on Tuesday.  Fortunately, we were able to get a direct flight departing at 6 pm at a reasonable price increase.  Thanks to Shelly and Margina for getting us to the airport.  The plane was absolutely full - I overheard another passenger say she had changed her flight also.  We landed on time at 8:50 pm and then things went sour.  It took us about 20 minutes to get off the plane, another 15 minutes waiting for our bags, and then 45 minutes for the shuttle to our hotel, Le Meridien at Dania Beach at Ft. Lauderdale Airport.  Traffic at the airport was ridiculous.  Five lanes had to consolidate down to 3 and people had to cross lanes to get to or from the terminals.  There must have been lots of New York transplants because the horns were incessant.  Not sure what they thought the honking would accomplish since no one could move.  So we didn't get to the hotel until around 10:30 pm.  

This morning we had no hot water so we just went on down to breakfast.  We had vouchers for the buffet, which was really good. The hotel seems very empty with only a couple of other tables occupied.  After breakfast, the hot water was back, but then the TV wouldn't work.  They weren't able to fix it so we were moved to the room next door.  Hopefully, these events are not a portent of our whole trip!

There aren't any restaurants within a mile or so of the hotel, so we just had lunch here sitting outside.

Not sorry to miss this mess at home.


We had dinner here at the hotel again after an adult beverage at the bar.  The staff here have all been very friendly and helpful, which goes a long way to making up for the hotel's deficiencies.  There is a Club Lounge that is supposed to be available for guests with our "status" so we dropped by to see what it was all about.  Here's what we found:

Then off to a quiet evening of TV and reading.

    Awww. Competent help seems to be missing from too many facilites even when paying premium prices. I'm hoping to locate snow shovelers to hire so we do not need to try shoveling. Listening to politicans is all the 'snow" I can handle.

Monday, February 3 - Not Falkland Islands

 Well, I guess I didn't cross enough fingers and toes.  It was pretty rough last night and Captain Ahbi warned us that getting into the Falklands would be a 50/50 proposition.  We were the third ship in port today and we drew the short end of the straw so we got the anchoring location farthest out where it was just too rough to try tendering.  It was marginal, at best, and the forecast for later in the day was worse so it was decided not to risk anyone's safety and move on.  The winds on deck were unbelievable - the kind that take your breath away. So glad I brushed my hair this morning. Tuesday, February 11 - At Sea in the Chilean Fjords

 Terry Bishop gave Part 1 of a 3-part series on Captain Fitzroy, Charles Darwin, and the HMS Beagle.  I have the picture of the replica in yesterday's entry.  That ship carried 69 people when it left England on its journey around the world.  Darwin slept on a hammock slung above the chart table in the chart room which he shared with 5 others.  That was right next to the privy I have the photo of.   There were two more lectures today, one on dolphins in the area that we might see, although I haven't seen anything since we left the Beagle Channel.  The other was about how the Antarctic continent is "managed" by the treaties.   We got up close and personal with the Amalie Glacier today.  The weather was very overcast so it wasn't the prettiest glacier we've seen. Monday, February 17 - Home Again

 I'm a bit late posting this, but we've had a busy few days. We were called off the ship at around 8:45 am and made our way through Customs to find our bus.  We had a "full day" tour of Santiago and then drop off at the airport.  The bus was comfortable for the 90 minute drive to Santiago.  We passed through a wine valley on the way there where they grow the carmenere grape.  Then a stop at the Catholic cathedral on the main square. A map of Santiago from the very early days. No more photos as there was a service going on and it didn't seem appropriate, but it is a lovely cathedral.  Interestingly, we watched 2 men being brought out of the church in handcuffs by the local police.  A woman who was inside said they were arrested after coming back from communion.   Then we made a stop at the government square before going for lunch on our own.  A little more driving around before heading off to the airport where we were dropped off around 4...
