Sunday, February 9 - Ushuaia, Argentina

We docked late last night and had an early tour this morning to see penguins!  We got into a nice catamaran that was enclosed but had small areas outside where we could get out for photo opportunities.

Ushuaia is a nice city.

Our first "stop" was at this lighthouse island where there were tons of cormorants and elephant seals.  They're a little hard to see, but those two brown spots towards the top of the island on the right are males who were having a loud "discussion."

After a long (1.5 hours) ride, we finally came to the penguin rookery.  We weren't allowed to step onto the island, but we got very close.

One of the young ones.

So many penguins.

They didn't seem bothered by us; I guess they're used to humans by now, but I'm still glad that people couldn't walk among them.

After about 30 minutes there, we headed back for the long sail to Ushuaia.

I don't know what this was out in the middle of the channel.  Some kind of marker obviously.

These are on the Chilean side.  The channel is between Argentina and Chile.

The crew cleaned the windows twice on our journey, which was very considerate of them as some people didn't want to venture out for pictures.

When we got back to Ushuaia, we went with Bob & Bo to Patagonia Brewery for a beer and late lunch.  Michael and I shared a great burger and had a good brown ale each for $36.  On the way back, we passed this restaurant.

The reflection is bad, but you can just make out these carcasses (lamb maybe) hanging over the flames to cook.  It smelled wonderful outside.

And this lovely sculpture is a Monument of Ancient People and Pioneers of Ushuaia, Argentina

Trivia was a lousy 10/15.  We had dinner at Compass Rose which was rather lightly attended.  Tonight is Super Bowl and I think many people watched in their cabins with room service, or went to the theatre where they had the game on a big screen and served typical snacks.  The crew even wore black/white striped shirts like referees.  Cute.

We're heading on to Punta Arenas through the Beagle Channel again and we'll pass 5 glaciers along the way.  Here's one of them.

And this one had a waterfall coming down.

Again we were able to Zoom with my siblings before heading off to bed.  We have a late arrival tomorrow, so maybe we'll sleep in a little.
