Tuesday, February 11 - At Sea in the Chilean Fjords
Terry Bishop gave Part 1 of a 3-part series on Captain Fitzroy, Charles Darwin, and the HMS Beagle. I have the picture of the replica in yesterday's entry. That ship carried 69 people when it left England on its journey around the world. Darwin slept on a hammock slung above the chart table in the chart room which he shared with 5 others. That was right next to the privy I have the photo of.
There were two more lectures today, one on dolphins in the area that we might see, although I haven't seen anything since we left the Beagle Channel. The other was about how the Antarctic continent is "managed" by the treaties.
We got up close and personal with the Amalie Glacier today. The weather was very overcast so it wasn't the prettiest glacier we've seen.

| The closer we got to the glacier, the more green the water became, but this photo doesn't do it justice. |
We got 2 points for 13/15 in Trivia today. Not bad. There was another "Upper Tier" party for those of us in the higher loyalty levels. Another couple got their Diamond pins for 1,000 nights with Regent. We see them every morning at their table in Coffee Connection. And Terry Bishop did a few of his songs as entertainment.
We were seated at a different section tonight at dinner, so we didn't see Sugi and Maricor. The service was good, but we missed them.

1000 nights on a ship!!!! That's getting close to 3 years! How close are the Figonis?
ReplyDeleteWe had another snow storm hit the Village. This morning I contemplated going out to try shoveling. Marjina said she would do half of the shoveling. At that point I decided to not go out and fortuitously the shovelers arrived so now all is well and the driveway and walkways are cleared.
What caused the water near glaciers to be green?
shelly
We're not sorry to miss these snowstorms. Just make sure there isn't one when we get home next Monday! I'm not sure about the green color, but I think it has something to do with the "rock flour" that comes from the granite. It gets ground up so fine that it's suspened in the water. It was a cloudy day, so perhaps the real color is more blue when the sun is out.
